Venimus, vidimus, celebravimus

We came, We saw, We celebrated !

27 years on and still kicking it into the stands!!!
What a fine weekend.

We really did have a great time and if you made it in to the event I’m certain you were impressed

Saturday was the usual day of setting up re-meeting old friends and making new ones. The weather was kind for 99% of the time with just a light 2 minute sprinkle to remind us of other less kind days.

There were about 10% less exhibitors in number than in some previous years as many of our foreign friends have gone back to their homelands, some of our own have emigrated, and some just couldn’t make it this year for different reasons. The great outcome was that we had a chance to welcome so many new faces and to intersperse these along the length of the exhibition. We already have plans to increase the number of exhibitors for 2014.

Even with the slightly reduced numbers the one overriding message that came back time and again was (in the perception of the experienced exhibitors)…. that the quality of exhibits had gone up and up…. and how very true that was.

I personally spent most of Saturday walking up and down while facing the traffic on the Green I couldn’t let myself turn round and engage with the amazing pictures. I took a trip from my own space number 88 to Brians at space 4 a round trip of 250 yards and it took an hour and three quarters!!!.
I’d have gotten to Barcelona as quick. And that was just chatting not looking at pics.

Well done to the many who sold work including those who floated home on surprise sale where they didn’t expect it.

On Saturday at 12am (at space 60) we made a presentation of €2,500 to the Dublin Simon Community.

They are, as ever, extremely grateful for our contribution to their work.
We have a separate draft for €2,500 for the National Council for the Blind in Ireland (NCBI). We’ll publish pics of both
presentations once they’re available.

Ahhh Dublin can be heaven on Sunday, with coffee at 11, and a stroll on
Stephens Green. as our Mr Purcell used to sing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4asSbKhqAGM

To coin a phrase Sunday was a charm, pleasant weather, congenial company, and I finally got to see some beautiful pictures, and the living was mostly very easy.

Great photographic work right across the event..
Wrong in many ways to single out specific presentations but the wonderful work of Beta (the dreams panel), Bartosz’s landscapes, Dave Kennedy’s infra reds of Pheonix Park, Aoife’s creativity, Maggie Morrisey’s calm studies, Giovannis 3d work, Alan Owen, Mark Russel-Hills works and our
own Brian McKeown, Denis’s outstanding chairs. beautiful reproductions of old 3″ glass positives, and amazing night photos of Dublin from Hon Lau.
Many too many to mention by name

Take a look at Giovanni Remigi ‘s tiime-lapse of his pace during the event just uploaded last evening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PEcioLm1lk

Respects to Space number 1 Mr Barney Champion who was there as the capo de capi from the original exhibition 27 years ago.

We’re looking forward to next year where a number of new ideas are coming forward while keeping the ethos of the event intact .. and we’d really love to have your views as inputs to help with planning next year. One idea is
that as each years event passes the charities are grateful for their donation…but the exhibitors leave with little but the memory. It is suggested that we might explore a limited edition t-shirt to polo shirt etc with the annual logo and strap line for say €6 to €10 (added to the exhibitor cost)
but for which all proceeds over cost would (as ever) go to the charities. I myself fancy a commemorative shirt from each year just to mark the taking part. It would be entirely voluntary by way of a tick box on the application form

We welcome your views !

Our good friend Paul of DCC went about on Sunday taking pics of exhibitors and their respective panels. Our idea is that most people end up in chats with many many people over the course of the weekend, and either remember
their names .. or their pictures, but often have trouble associating the two.
Expect additions of pics of the exhibitors and their panels to the Allocations page of the website as time goes on. Please feel free to comment/compliment your fellow exhibitors on the pages if you feel their work deserves it

There’ll be some more postings here closing out the PP2013 event as we load pictures and news. If you have any pictures you’d like to share (crowds, funny, mood, atmospheric etc) we’d love to have them. send them on to any

“How many prints can I fit in the space ?”

as answered:…

Hi name, That’s an almost impossible question.

We’ve see big prints, small prints, micro prints. How much space you want between them…. viewer distance / impact/ lighting / not wanting to clog it all up, etc

Here’s a strategy.
1) take a wall space 8′ by (say) 5′6″ high.
2) mark the outline
3) blutack your smallest and your largest print on it and then move 10′ to 15′ back
4) walk moderately slowly past it and imagine 1/4 mile of “competeting” images (yes the Green is a mile in perimeter)
5) if the smallest picture wants you to move in… go for it. else you need to think bigger and dont forget to leave “white/black” space between the pics,

technically you could fit 200 5×4’s or 60 10×8’s into the space with minimal spacing… but would you want to.??
suggest you just pick a lot of pictures you love and rotate them so that they look right to you from hour to hour to hold your interest, and then spend the rest of the time chatting to the other exhibitors…..elsewise you’ll have 16 hours standing and guarding the perfect layout.

In 2012 we received a question on “Selling my work at the Peoples Photography Exhibition”… was it allowed?

see the response below

______________________________________________________

Hi ‘name’

As suggested in “The Rules” The event is a photography exhibition. NOT a market.

Our permission for the OPW specifically states:

No trading is to take place within the curtilage of the Park.

and

Commercial advertisements by way of amplified announcements, posters, handbills etc. will not be allowed. Any prior advertising or publicity material should indicate that St. Stephen’s Green Park is being used courtesy of the Office of Public Works.

It’s always a pleasure that someone would like your work enough to actually want to part with their hard earned euros to possess some of it BUT it’s not meant to be a photo sale (a-la the painters down on Merrion Square).

By all means take money for a print… but be warned there’s a very fine line between touting for sales and “accepting an offer” for a single piece of work. If you are “offering”… then you are subject to street trading legislation and may be prosecuted.
All goes back to the Laws of Contract.

Example A:
Man has picture with price-tag on it (HE is offering to sell) , Buyer comes (haggles) and ‘accepts’ price. Money exchanges. This man is willfully “selling”

Example B:
Man has picture on display. Viewer comes and makes an offer. (HE is offering to buy) Man with picture accepts. Money exchanges…… different emphasis, different but subtle treatment in law.

hi All,

For the last few years one of the nicest duties and moments for us has been the presentation of the PP proceeds to NCBI and Simon. Both charities appreciate the donations so much… and it’s all down to you guys and girls.

This year… for a number of reasons that were important to all of us we wanted to be able to do the presentation actually during the exhibition. Both charities are delighted to be invited and attend and will promote the event through their own websites as well.

So … more news later on the actual day, time and arrangements but we wanted to let you all know.

It is really important to us as organisers on yor behalf …that you know the donations are actually being received.

and equally important that the charities see its a group thing and that the donation didn’t magic itself out of the air.

Also, there’s every chance of a good photo (that’ll be the Nikon:)

Hi All,

Well, isn’t this the finest weather for lugging around a massive bag of cameras, glass, tripods and the multiple assorted tools and paraphernalia the committed shooter just can’t do without these days.

Or then again… you may be that discreet classy €6k Leica M9 type.. with a few classic Elmarit prime lenses in the jacket pocket.

It’s been a long time since we had this sort of light so I thought it useful to remind you to remember your old Kodak “sunny 16″ rule. Sun at your back, f11, 125/sec, 100 ASA. In dem day youngfeller we had no DOF preview, 5 frames/sec motordrive, live horizon, 1080p vid, CLS or HDF). Just a old Zeiss Ikon, or if you were real fancy a Pentax Spotmatic, Yahsi-mashi or Rollieflex TLR, a steady hand, a few tips, distain for Instamatic or Polaroid shooters and some attitude.

lol.. beginning to sound like an ole gunslinger
(steady up there T)

Either way… you are all very welcome to the 2013 Exhibitors listing.
Just confirming you’ve been added !! though we’ve still to get to the postbox to collect the latest post. This listing was created from those who’ve confirmed their application forms were/are in flight.

Take a look at the PP website… www.peoplesphotography.ie

I’ve just updated it with some new infra-red studies from Dave Kennedy. The profiles are beginning to show quite an amazing range of images and approaches. Please send in a few of your own. Be a “stand-up” kind of shooter and show off the work

We’re all looking forward to seeing you all in August.

There’ll be more over the next days
regards to you all

Tony.
